American Mineral Water Explained

How US mineral and spring waters are sourced and regulated, why they run softer than European peers, and how brands like Mountain Valley and Saratoga fit into the category. For a ranked comparison, see the best American mineral water brands guide.

    American water sources

The US lacks the volcanic deep-aquifer geology that gives Europe its high-mineral sparkling waters. Most American bottled water is spring water rather than mineral water — softer, lower TDS, and labelled under FDA "spring water" rules rather than EU "natural mineral water" rules. Mountain Valley and Saratoga are the closest US equivalents to European mineral water in source-protection rigor and consistent mineral content.

    Mineral content comparison

US bottled water averages around 100–400 mg/L TDS — well below European mineral averages of 500–2,500 mg/L. For higher mineral content from American sources, look for naturally carbonated spring waters or pour European mineral water into the rotation.
