    What is natural mineral water?

Natural mineral water is a legally protected category in the EU: it must come from an officially recognized underground source, be bottled at source, contain a stable mineral composition, and be free from any treatment beyond removing iron, manganese or sulfur. In the US, FDA rules define it as water with at least 250 mg/L of total dissolved solids from a protected source.

Most bottled waters fall into one of four categories — natural mineral, spring, artesian or purified — and the labeling differences are meaningful. Mineral and spring waters reflect their source geology; purified waters (Aquafina, Smartwater, Dasani) are processed to remove almost all dissolved solids before bottling.

    Sparkling vs still mineral water

Natural sparkling mineral waters (San Pellegrino, Perrier, Badoit, Gerolsteiner, Apollinaris, Ferrarelle, Vichy Catalan) emerge from volcanic or carbonate aquifers where dissolved CO₂ enriches the water with more minerals at source. Still mineral waters (Evian, Volvic, Vittel, Contrex, Highland Spring, Mountain Valley) come from slower-flowing aquifers with a cleaner, rounder profile.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mineral water and spring water?

Under EU rules, natural mineral water must come from a protected underground source, be bottled at source with a stable mineral composition, and carry an official approval. Spring water has similar origin rules but doesn't require the same mineral consistency. In the US, both are FDA-defined categories with looser thresholds.

What are the most popular mineral water brands in Europe?

Evian, Volvic, Vittel, San Pellegrino, Perrier, Gerolsteiner, Acqua Panna, Highland Spring, Spa and Vichy Catalan are the most widely sold natural mineral water brands across European supermarkets and restaurants.

What are the best mineral water brands in the USA?

Mountain Valley (Arkansas), Saratoga (New York), Poland Spring (Maine), Crystal Geyser and Arrowhead (California) are the most established American natural spring waters. Imported European brands like San Pellegrino, Evian and Voss also dominate the premium US segment.

Is bottled mineral water better than tap water?

Tap water in most developed countries meets strict safety standards and is fine for daily drinking. Bottled mineral water offers consistent mineral content (calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate) and a specific taste profile from its source, which is what people pay for — not necessarily better hydration.

Which natural mineral water brand has the most minerals?

Vichy Catalan from Spain leads at 3,052 mg/L TDS, followed by Apollinaris (2,650 mg/L), Gerolsteiner (2,500 mg/L) and Contrex (2,078 mg/L). See our full highest mineral content ranking for details.

Are all bottled waters mineral water?

No. Bottled waters fall into several categories: natural mineral water, spring water, artesian water, purified water (reverse osmosis or distillation) and alkaline water. Only waters meeting the legal definition of natural mineral water can be labeled as such.
