High TDS Water Benefits

High TDS isn't a downside — it's the signature of a water rich in calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate. Here's why mineral-rich water is good for you.

    Understanding TDS

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) measures everything dissolved in water — mostly calcium, magnesium, sodium and bicarbonate in natural mineral water. A water rated 2,500 mg/L like Gerolsteiner carries 2.5 grams of beneficial minerals per liter. For a full primer on the categories, see TDS in bottled water →

    Benefits of high mineral content

    • Stronger hydration through sodium and bicarbonate-driven fluid retention.
    • Meaningful daily contribution to calcium and magnesium intake (30–50% of RDI per liter).
    • pH buffering of stomach acid and exercise-induced lactic acid.
    • Natural source of electrolytes — no sugar or sweeteners.

    Taste differences

High-TDS waters taste fuller and slightly mineral-savory — what wine writers call "structure." Low-TDS waters (Fiji, Evian) taste lighter and softer. Most newcomers find Gerolsteiner or San Pellegrino enjoyable from the first glass; very high-TDS waters like Donat Mg take a few sips to acquire.

    Potential considerations

High-TDS water from high-sodium sources (Vichy Catalan, 1,110 mg/L sodium) isn't appropriate for people on sodium-restricted diets. Very high-mineral functional waters (Donat Mg) are intended for 200–500 ml doses, not all-day drinking. For most healthy adults, high-TDS mineral water is safe, beneficial and a clean alternative to electrolyte drinks.
