Best Quality Bottled Water: What Makes a Water Brand Better?

The best quality bottled water is not always the most expensive bottle on the shelf. A quality water brand should be clean, safe, good tasting, transparent about its source, and appropriate for how you plan to use it.

    1. Source matters

Check the water source first. Common types: spring, natural mineral, artesian, purified, alkaline and sparkling mineral water. A quality brand should clearly explain where the water comes from — for example Evian publishes its French Alps source and Deer Park documents its spring sourcing.

    2. Taste should match the purpose

Purified water tastes clean and neutral; spring water is fresh and light; mineral water is crisp and sometimes salty; artesian water is smooth; sparkling mineral water is bubbly; alkaline water is smooth and sometimes slightly sweet. Fiji is known for soft taste, Gerolsteiner for strong mineral flavor.

    3. pH level can affect taste

pH 7 is neutral, below is acidic, above is alkaline. Fiji lists about 7.7 and Evian 7.2. pH alone doesn't make water better — taste, safety, source, minerals and value matter more.

    4. TDS shows mineral strength

Low-TDS water tastes light; high-TDS water tastes mineral-rich. Gerolsteiner sits around 2,527 mg/L; Fiji around 222 mg/L. Choose low-to-moderate TDS for easy daily drinking, high TDS for mineral-rich water.

    5. Mineral content adds character

Key minerals: calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, bicarbonate and silica. Gerolsteiner is a strong mineral water example with about 348 mg/L calcium. Evian contains naturally occurring electrolytes including calcium, magnesium and potassium.

    6. Sodium level matters

Some mineral waters are naturally high in sodium. High-mineral does not mean better for everyone. Check the label and pick low-sodium options if you're on a restricted diet.

    7. Packaging and bottle size

    • Bottle material and recycled content
    • Glass availability
    • Bulk pack and large bottle options
    • Portability and cap design

    8. Transparency is a quality signal

Better brands publish source, water quality report, pH, mineral analysis, sodium, treatment method, bottling location and contact information.

    9. Best quality bottled water by buyer type

    • Daily hydration — spring or balanced mineral water
    • Premium taste — artesian or natural mineral water
    • Mineral content — high-mineral water
    • Low sodium — low-sodium spring or purified
    • Sparkling alternative — sparkling mineral water
    • Alkaline preference — alkaline bottled water

    10. What makes a water brand better?

Clear source, clean and pleasant taste, published water-quality details, reliable availability, appropriate mineral content, reasonable sodium, fair value and packaging that fits the use case.
