    What Is Aquafina?

Aquafina is produced by PepsiCo and starts as municipal tap water. It is then filtered through reverse osmosis, carbon filtration, UV light and ozone — Pepsi's proprietary HydRO-7 purification system — until virtually all dissolved minerals have been removed.

    Why Aquafina has a pH of 5.5 – 6.5

    Purification removes minerals

Reverse osmosis strips calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate — the natural buffers that hold water near pH 7. Without them, pH drifts down.

    CO₂ exposure lowers pH

Demineralized water absorbs ambient and dissolved CO₂ aggressively. The CO₂ forms carbonic acid, pulling pH into the 5.5–6.5 range.

    No buffering capacity

With TDS around 4 mg/L, Aquafina has no minerals left to resist pH shifts, so it stays slightly acidic from bottling to consumption.

    Is Aquafina safe to drink?

Yes. pH alone does not determine drinking-water safety. The FDA does not regulate bottled water pH, and the EPA's recommended range for tap water (6.5–8.5) is about taste and pipe corrosion, not health. Healthy adults regulate body pH tightly regardless of what they drink.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the pH of Aquafina water?

Aquafina has a pH of approximately 5.5 to 6.5 — mildly acidic. The exact value drifts within that band depending on CO₂ exposure during bottling and storage.

    Is Aquafina alkaline water?

No. Aquafina sits below neutral on the pH scale, so it is the opposite of alkaline. For alkaline options, see our best alkaline water guide.

Is drinking acidic Aquafina bad for you?

No. Bottled water pH in the 5.5–6.5 range is well within safe drinking limits and does not affect blood pH in healthy people.
