    Packaging

    Carton Water Brands

Carton water brands trade plastic for paperboard — but cartons are actually composite packaging, with layers of polyethylene and aluminum bonded to the paper. The sustainability picture is more complicated than the marketing suggests.

    The major carton brands

    • JUST Water — Adirondack spring water in a Tetra-style carton, ~88% renewable (paperboard + plant-based cap and shoulder).
    • Flow Water — Canadian artesian alkaline water in Tetra Pak cartons.
    • Boxed Water Is Better — Purified water in plain white cartons; one of the original carton-water brands.
    • Rethink Water — Kids' carton water with similar Tetra-style packaging.

    How sustainable are cartons really?

Cartons are roughly 70-90% paperboard from FSC-certified forests, with the rest being thin layers of LDPE plastic and (in aseptic cartons) aluminum foil. They have a low production footprint and are technically recyclable — but carton recycling infrastructure in the U.S. is patchy, and many cartons end up in landfill.

    When cartons win

Cartons are clearly better than virgin PET when sourced from certified forests and when recycling infrastructure exists. They lose to refillable bottles. They roughly tie with recycled aluminum, with the trade-offs depending on local waste systems.
