    Comparison

    Plastic vs Aluminum Water Bottles

The 'aluminum is greener than plastic' claim is partly marketing and partly true. The real answer depends on what happens to the bottle after you drink it.

    Production footprint

An aluminum bottle takes roughly 2× the energy and emits 2-3× the CO₂ to produce compared with an equivalent PET plastic bottle. Plastic wins on cradle-to-gate footprint, by a clear margin.

    Recycling reality

U.S. aluminum can recycling rate: ~45%. U.S. PET bottle recycling rate: ~15-20%. Recycled aluminum uses about 5% of the energy of virgin aluminum; recycled PET uses about 50% of virgin PET energy. Aluminum's huge end-of-life advantage erases the production gap — if it actually gets recycled.

    Taste and safety

Aluminum bottles have a polymer liner so the water never touches metal. Taste differences are minimal in blind tests. Both are food-safe; both are BPA-free in modern formulations.

    Who wins

Recycled aluminum > recycled PET > virgin PET > trashed aluminum. The best move is refillable. The second-best is whichever single-use option you'll actually recycle.
