Ingredient guide
Best Sparkling Water Without Sweeteners
Lots of products marketed as 'sparkling water' actually contain artificial sweeteners — sucralose, acesulfame potassium, stevia. If you want truly clean sparkling water, these are the brands that don't sweeten.
Truly unsweetened brands
- LaCroix — natural flavors only, no sweeteners
- Waterloo — natural flavors only, no sweeteners
- bubly — natural flavors only, no sweeteners
- Polar Seltzer — natural flavors only, no sweeteners
- Spindrift — real fruit juice (slight calories but no added sweetener)
- All plain sparkling mineral waters — Gerolsteiner, S.Pellegrino, Perrier, Topo Chico
Brands to watch out for
- Sparkling Ice — contains sucralose
- Bai Bubbles — contains stevia and erythritol
- Many "vitamin sparkling" or "energy sparkling" drinks — usually sweetened
How to verify
Check the ingredient list, not the front of the can. If you see sucralose, acesulfame potassium, aspartame, stevia leaf extract, monk fruit, erythritol or any sugar listed, the product is sweetened.
Frequently asked questions
Is Spindrift sweetened?
Not with added sweeteners — but it contains real fruit juice, so it has small amounts of natural sugar and a few calories per can.
What about 'natural flavors'?
Natural flavors don't add sweetness. They're flavor compounds derived from plants or animals (per FDA rules) and are calorie-free.
