    Mineral Water vs Sparkling Water

"Mineral" describes where the water comes from. "Sparkling" describes whether it has bubbles. The two are independent properties — a water can be either, both, or neither.

    Two different axes

Source axis: mineral, spring, artesian, purified. Carbonation axis: still or sparkling. Sparkling means CO2 is dissolved in the water, whether it bubbled up naturally or was added at the bottling plant.

    Four common combinations

    • Still mineral water — e.g., Evian, Aqua Carpatica still
    • Sparkling mineral water — e.g., Gerolsteiner, S.Pellegrino
    • Still spring water — e.g., Poland Spring, Acqua Panna
    • Sparkling spring/purified water — e.g., LaCroix, bubly

What sparkling water without minerals actually is

Most flavored sparkling waters (LaCroix, bubly, Waterloo) are purified water with added carbonation and natural flavors — they're not mineral waters at all. They contribute no meaningful calcium or magnesium.

    Frequently asked questions

Does sparkling water count as hydration?

Yes — carbonation does not reduce water's hydration value.

Is sparkling mineral water bad for teeth?

Plain sparkling water is far less acidic than soda, and bicarbonate-rich mineral waters are buffered. Flavored or citrus-containing sparkling waters are more acidic.
