American water
Best American Spring Water Brands
Most American 'bottled water' is technically spring water — collected from a protected underground source that flows naturally to the surface. Here are the regional brands that define the U.S. market.
What FDA-defined spring water is
The FDA requires spring water to come from a borehole or natural orifice that taps a specific underground formation. It can be collected with a pump but must have the same composition and quality as the natural spring. Minerals are not added.
The regional majors
- Poland Spring — Maine. Northeast's flagship. Low TDS, soft, mild.
- Deer Park — Maryland / Mid-Atlantic. Multiple source springs.
- Crystal Geyser — California (Olancha). Higher-mineral western spring water bottled at source.
- Ozarka — Texas. East Texas pine forest springs.
- Zephyrhills — Florida. Central Florida springs.
- Arrowhead — California / Southwest. Sierra Nevada and California springs.
- Ice Mountain — Michigan. Midwest distribution.
How to choose
For everyday drinking, pick the regional brand bottled closest to you — fresher logistics, smaller carbon footprint, and usually the lowest price. For mineral content, look at the brand's published TDS and choose accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
Is spring water better than purified water?
Neither is universally better. Spring water retains naturally occurring minerals; purified water is stripped clean. The right pick depends on taste preference and how much mineral content you want from your water.
Are all these brands owned by the same company?
Poland Spring, Deer Park, Ozarka, Zephyrhills, Arrowhead and Ice Mountain are all part of BlueTriton Brands (formerly Nestlé Waters North America). Crystal Geyser is independent.
